Op 5 december brengt ECOPOLIS, Fair(er) Futures Festival, opnieuw denkers en doeners, schrijvers en activisten uit diverse landen samen in Brussel. Een dag vol inspirerende gesprekken en hoopvolle nieuwe perspectieven.
Want de toekomst dient zich niet bepaald rustig aan. Klimaatontwrichting, groeiende ongelijkheid en een wereld die steeds harder wordt: hoe bouwen we een samenleving die wél werkt voor iedereen? En wat hebben we nodig om die toekomst te verbeelden én vorm te geven?
We stellen grote vragen, zoals die van Anna Tsing: wat is de kunst van het leven op een beschadigde planeet? Vragen die aan de orde zijn door extreme hitte en bosbranden, en ook een kwestie van rechtvaardigheid zijn. Want wie het minst bijdraagt aan ecologische ontwrichting, wordt het hardst getroffen. Nepal laat dat zien.
Daarom blijft ECOPOLIS de plek om grenzen te verleggen. Want verandering begint bij wat we ons kunnen voorstellen — en bij de moed om er samen werk van te maken.

The history of the nutmeg is one of conquest and exploitation – of both human life and the natural environment.
Tracing the threats to our future to the discovery of the New World and the sea route to the Indian Ocean, Amitav Ghosh argues that the dynamics of climate change are rooted in a centuries-old geopolitical order constructed by Western colonialism. The story of the nutmeg becomes a parable revealing the ways human history has always been entangled with earthly materials – spices, tea, sugarcane, opium, and fossil fuels.
Our crisis, Ghosh shows, is ultimately the result of a mechanistic view of the earth, where nature exists only as a resource for humans to use for our own ends, rather than a force of its own, full of agency and meaning. The book is a sharp critique of contemporary society and speaks to the profoundly remarkable ways in which human history is shaped by non-human forces.

De 15-jarige Lauren Olamina woont met haar vader, in een afgeschermde community, beschermd tegen de anarchie buiten de muren. Lauren lijdt aan hyperempathie, een slopende gevoeligheid voor de emoties van anderen. Maar als de community onveilig wordt, moet Lauren vluchten.

Capital is currently cannibalizing every sphere of life-guzzling wealth from nature and racialized populations, sucking up our ability to care for each other, and gutting the practice of politics.
In this tightly argued and urgent volume, leading Marxist feminist theorist Nancy Fraser charts the voracious appetite of capital, tracking it from crisis point to crisis point, from ecological devastation to the collapse of democracy, from racial violence to the devaluing of care work.
What we need, she argues, is a wide-ranging socialist movement that can recognize the rapaciousness of capital – and starve it to death.
